The Pope And The Dope – Vatican Begins To Distance Itself From Homophobic Kim Davis – Updates Galore

HT_kim_davis_jef_150903_16x9_992Reports are coming in that the Pope was blindsided by his meeting with Kim Davis. Courtesy of CBS Chicago:

Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich is on his way to Rome tonight.

Before he left, he spoke out for the first time on that controversial meeting between Pope Francis and Kim Davis, the county clerk from Kentucky who refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses.

Cupich in essence told CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine not to read too much into it.

A highly placed source inside the Vatican claims the Pope was blindsided…

A close advisor to Pope Francis tweeted that the Pope was, in his words, “exploited” by those who set up what the CBS 2 source says was a “meeting that never should have taken place.”

Some call it an attempt by highly placed church leaders in the U.S. to diminish the impact of the Pope’s visit.

The Irish Times is reporting the following:

Pope Francis’s meeting with Kim Davis “should not be considered a form of support of her position”, the Vatican has said.

After days of confusion, the Vatican issued a statement clarifying Pope Francis’s September 24th meeting with Ms Davis, a county clerk in Kentucky who has become a focal point in the gay marriage debate in the US because of her refusal to sign marriage licences for gay couples.

The Vatican said Pope Francis met with many people during his US stay, due to his “kindness and availability”.

The statement said: “The pope did not enter into the details of the situation of Ms Davis and his meeting with her should not be considered a form of support of her position in all of its particular and complex aspects.”

So there you have it. I believe he was set up by the Papal Nuncio who most certainly would have been aware of Kim Davis. Kim Davis’ pentacostal religion does not like Catholics and apparently views the Pope as the anti-Christ. Nothing about that meeting made any sense and it diminished the Pope’s visit to the US.

From The NYT:

“Pope Francis met with several dozen persons who had been invited by the Nunciature to greet him as he prepared to leave Washington for New York City,” Father Lombardi said in the statement, referring to the Vatican’s term for its embassy.

He added: “Such brief greetings occur on all papal visits and are due to the pope’s characteristic kindness and availability. The only real audience granted by the pope at the Nunciature was with one of his former students and his family.”

So, there was no fifteen minute meeting. I wondered about that if all he told her was to stay strong and pray for him. The dope and her lawyer lied about it. Now it will be interesting to see just who invited her and whether heads will roll.

From AP: Holy shit, they are now calling the Pope a liar.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Kim Davis’ attorney is disputing the Vatican’s description and interpretation of her Sept. 24 meeting with Pope Francis.

Attorney Mat Staver told The Associated Press early Friday that the meeting was an affirmation of the Kentucky county clerk’s right to be conscientious objector.

He says Vatican personnel initiated contact with Davis’ camp on Sept. 14 saying the pope wanted to meet her. He says Vatican security picked up her and her husband up from their Washington hotel and brought her to the Vatican embassy. He says Vatican officials told her to change her hairstyle so she wouldn’t be recognized since they wanted the encounter kept secret.

Staver disputed a Vatican spokesman’s claims that the pope only met with Davis in a receiving line. He said the couple was in a room with only the pope and Vatican personnel.

The Atlantic reports:

It’s still not clear who arranged the meeting with Davis from the Vatican side. Mat Staver, Davis’s lawyer at Liberty Counsel, refused to say who had reached out to his firm, although he noted that their conversations began before Francis arrived in the United States. Thomas Rosica, the Vatican’s English-language media representative, claims that Vatican staff did not organize the meeting, according to the Religion News Service. Michael Sean Winters of the National Catholic Reporter has speculated who the representative was: “Seeing as the meeting happened at the nunciature in Washington, it could only have happened with the approval and participation of the nuncio, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano.”

Salon has now weighed in:

Charles Pierce nailed it: The Vatican confirms Pope Francis was “ratf*cked” into meeting Kim Davis

Esquire’s Charles Pierce speculated that Pope Francis had been railroaded by Evangelicals. Turns out he was right.

On Thursday, Charles Pierce speculated that the pope was “ratfucked” into meeting Kim Davis, and as conspiratorial as his speculation seemed at first, Vatican spokesman Reverend Federico Lombardi largely confirmed it in a statement released Friday morning.

Pierce wrote that we must “stipulate that there are more than a few members of the Church’s permanent bureaucracy, both within the Clan Of The Red Beanie and without, who are not happy that this gentleman got elected Pope, and who are not happy with what he’s done and said since he was.” If you are one of those people “and you’re looking to ratfuck the pope’s visit to the United States, and to his agenda in general, you’d be looking to put him in a box.”

“So, how would you do that?” Pierce asked, before answering, “I’d arrange for the pope to meet Davis, but not as an American culture war celebrity, but as a devout Christian whose faith is under vague assault.” Then, “with the pope safely back in Rome, I’d leak the news to a conservative Catholic website and wait for the inevitable explosion.”

Which, according to the Vatican’s latest statement, is exactly what happened.

It is at times like this that I really miss Andrew Sullivan.

There is an interesting, and fairly convincing, article on Esquire on what likely happened here. It’s doubtful that Pope Francis even knew who Davis was, and it looks like he was set up by some right-wing Vatican bureaucrats.

  2. IG – – You’ve become my “Breaking News” go-to channel ! Thanks for all you do (although I know it’s an obsession and you couldn’t stop yourself if you tried – – at least for long, as we’ve seen.)

    • Her obsession is our gain. I read Charlie Pierce’s column daily … he’s amazingly astute and clever, as well as funny. It was becoming obvious that the Vatican was starting to recognize that the pope had stepped into a puddle that pretty much has ruined any good will he managed to gain during his visit.
Now comes the “Vatican Blame Game” … prediction is that the lowest head will take the heat.
OR if they are smart, they will come right out and say that Staver is lying – which would be nummy.

Thanks for posting that IG! I also hope I didn’t offended you with my reply to your comment over on PoGates.

When this story first broke and I looked at the “facts” presented, my WTF moment came with Staver’s claim that Kim had been told to do her hair in a different way in order not to be recognized; that, and the black SUV sneaking her in added up to too much detail. What no dark glasses or fake mustache?! It was impossible, at that point, to know whether Kim and the Pope had met. At the same time, I was pretty sure that, at the very least, facts were being embellished.

The story, as being told now, makes sense.

I was just thinking that the Pope must have been very angry at being put in this position for the Vatican to have released that statement today. He was very well received in the US for the most part and then he found himself in the middle of a culture war (which he had assiduously avoided until that point), which pretty much negated all of his work.

I hope Archbishop Viagra [h/t to MrsG] is shown the door soon. Obviously, the Pope is too liberal for the religious, conservative clergy in the US (fine Christians that they are)!

I’m just going to add that I am not religious. I was brought up as a Catholic, but in my teenage years and twenties I began to ask a lot of questions and fell away from the church.

I disagree with the Pope and the Catholic church on many, many things but I do like this Pope. I think he has many good messages.

And Republicans and Kim Davis can go to hell for this.

      • IG – sorry I posted before I saw this go up.
Agree, Archbishop Viagra is a GREAT nickname … since he is “only” an archbishop, I’m guessing he’s going down to Papal Washerman.
I have never been catholic – and also fell away from anything having to do with religion years ago. That being said, my issues with this pope have more to do with his personal background than with his current job/position.
This man is NOT friendly to gay human beings. In fact he has been viciously anti-gay – and downright mean to LGBT’s even within his own church. This is NOT a gay friendly religion. He is NOT a liberal on many issues – he is simply “softer” than Ratzinger was (I will NOT use the word Nazi although I could).
His one good issue was climate change.
As far as human rights, he’s just as much of an epic fail as the rest of them.

But I also believe he was r*tf*cked into this – he’d better watch his back or he’ll become a character in a novel about a dead pope.

    • “Embellished” is such a lovely word that covers truly a multitude of sins.

As I see it, the real problem here is Staver. He has her hook, line and sinker – she looks like a freakish idiot with a sketchy past and he’s getting all the money and publicity. Boy – she sure is stupid.

    • WHY would the POPE tell her to change her hair AND use a black SUV to sneak in – Staver’s imagination is running way wild here. He’s caught up in his own nightmare.

I was just reading about this. It keeps getting better and better. Thanks for the youtube link.

    • 40Watt says:

It really does. 😃 For a man who’s said to hate gays, he deserves a bloody Oscar for that performance, wouldn’t you say? 😉

Now where is the video of Kim and husband number what ever?

  6. 40Watt says:

Before the Pope’s visit, the local ABC anchor in Philadelphia went to Argentina to find out what shaped Jorge Mario Bergoglio into the person we see today. It was fascinating, looking at his failures and successes. As a young man, he apparently was quite rigid.

His rise was meteoric becoming the head of all Argentine Jesuits by age 36.

But his job as provincial was marked by the upheavals of Argentina’s Dirty War and the split it caused among the Jesuits.

Some say Bergoglio’s authoritarian style in those days made the situation within the Society of Jesus worse and he lost his leadership position.

His tenure as rector at the Colegio Maximo began a decade of exile, reflection, and a fundamental change in him, a change toward listening, dialogue, and collegiality.

    • If you want to read something that will curl your hair – pick up the book on the Argentine Dirty War …. we have dear friends in Buenos Aires who still cannot even imagine WHY this man was selected as pope. The Dirty War is not forgotten by the Argentines.

  9. Pearl says:

    I got this email today…
~After days of speculation, the truth has finally come out: Pope Francis did not hold a private meeting to express his support for Kim Davis’s efforts to block gay marriage licenses.

According to an official Vatican statement, Kim Davis was among “several dozen persons” attending a reception at the Vatican embassy, “the pope did not enter into the details of the situation,” and “his meeting with her should not be considered a form of support.”

Moreover, it seems that the Pope did not request Kim Davis be invited.

  10. 1smartcanerican™ says:

IG, thanks for posting this. I was very upset when it seemed that Pope Francis had a private visit with the witch, and am now thrilled that it doesn’t seem to be the visit described by her lawyer. Just another layer to the lying that is going down in Madam Kim’s world. She is a piece of work, eh? That said, I believe she is being used as she is not smart enough to handle this herself. BTW, I’ve never been Catholic and have not been at all pleased with their beliefs, but this Pope has allowed some fresh air to enter the Church and I thank him for that.
