On Holidays I always take a few hours to do some Ancestry sleuthing – – – I always seem to find unexpected tidbits on these ‘special days’ – – to the point that I often wonder if my ancestors aren’t communicating with me. Following is a sad, yet seemingly timeless, newspaper account from Boone County, Iowa in February 1875. The young couple is my paternal great grandmother’s brother and his wife. Not all that much has changed in 140 years it seems. Ida was 21 when she died, married at 16.
Boone County Democrat 1875
Once more it is the duty of the Democrat to lay before its readers the details of a horrible crime, a crime that we would fain pass over in silence, and that we regret to be obliged to publish. A crime sickening in its details, without justification, and without the mitigating circumstances of shame to urge on the deed. The crime was the performing of an abortion on herself by a young married woman, names Mrs. D.E. B, and her subsequent death. We give the facts of the case as they occurred.
The deceased, whose maiden name was Ida P, was the daughter of Marvin P, the proprietor of the P House. About two years and a half ago she was married to D.E. B, a young man well known in town, and the couple had one child. The marriage was an unhappy one and they separated. Who was to blame for their domestic infelicity it is hard to tell. Probably both. She returned to her parents, and has lived with them since. Some time ago, (according to the testimony of several witnesses at the coroner’s inquest), D E made overtures to his wife for a reconciliation, to which she accepted and received him in the house from time to time, despite the objections of her parents. Soon she became pregnant, when, finding that no permanent reconciliation would take place between herself and husband, she determined to rid herself of all future responsibility, and committed the crime, for which she paid the terrible penalty of her life within a few days. Dr. H, who attended her in her last illness, ignorant of what had been done, suspected the cause, and urged her to confess to some of the female friends. This she did, and from the testimony of the lady confessed to, (whose name we withhold), given before the coroner’s jury, we gather the material for our statement. The deceased stated that her husband had furnished her with medicine and instruments. She was pregnant about four months, and succeeded in ridding herself. This took place Thursday, and the confession was made on Friday. Friday night she died in great agony.
Some of the facts coming out, notice of the case was sent to Mayor W, who at once directed Marshal R to take charge of the corpse, and summon Coroner D. This was Saturday morning. The jury, consisting of Messrs. W.W. Ni, S.R. P, and Fred. C, were in session all Saturday afternoon, and did not finish their labors until Sunday. A post mortem examination was held on Sunday, and the statement of the witnesses before the coroner corroborated. There is no doubt as to the cause of the young woman’s death, and the only question is if there were accessories—if any one besides the deceased was guilty. Pending the investigation of this question, the jury have not yet brought in their verdict. No arrests have been made
In connection with this matter it gives us pleasure to state that none of our Boone physicians were mixed up in this affair, or were in any way concerned in the crime. Usually a physician is found to be at the bottom of the business, but we doubt if a Boone doctor could be found who is vile enough to lend himself to such a purpose. The medicine used was probably procured from some quack, who we hope will be ferreted out and given the term in the penitentiary he so richly deserves.
How sad! What an unusual form of reporting. My grandparents lived in the next county to the east – Story Co. at the same time. Small world. Something like that, at that time, would be totally mind boggling! People just didn’t do that in that rural area. And to write it up like that. RIP mother and child. Did you ever hear if anyone was convicted in helping her? I imagine my grandparents heard about it. He was Supt. of Schools in Fernald, just east of Neveda, east of Ames. It would have been discussed behind closed doors.
Don’t know, Mrs. G. Husband lived in Omaha for some years and died at 65. Was buried in Boone, Iowa, though. The son lived in Boone it seems, married and died at 59. Sadly, I’m the font of ancestor knowledge in my family now – – all the oldsters have passed away. There were stories to be told, but lips were sealed and, as they say, went to the grave. My maternal grandmother hailed from Steamboat Springs. I’ve been looking at their headstones online. The Steamboat Springs cemetery has a beautiful setting – – they are resting in peace. I can’t express my thanks enough to findagrave.com and all the volunteer folks that post headstone photos and obituaries. I’m forever indebted for the information I’ve gathered from their efforts.
